Aretha Franklin

SingingPosted by carina 26 May, 2010 12:16AM

Maybe the Best Female Singer Ever

Aretha Franklin is almost seventy years old and yet she is still known as the Queen of Soul. This vivacious singer has won eighteen Grammy Awards in her lifetime and is still actively touring and singing today. She has had twenty #1 Singles and forty-five Top 40 Singles. Aretha Franklin has pioneered soul, jazz, rock, pop and R & B and found a way to make Gospel popular in the mainstream. It takes a special kind of artist to achieve what she has. After all, Aretha was the first female to be inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, period.

Among her incredible achievements, Aretha was the first black woman to appear on the cover of Time magazine. She was also awarded with an honorary Doctor of Musicology by the University of Detroit. In 1994 she was the youngest recipient of the Kennedy Center Honor. In 1994 Ms.Franklin was awarded the National Medal of Arts by President Clinton. In 2005 President Bush Jr. awarded Aretha Franklin with the Presidential Medal of Freedom. Aretha Franklin's list of awards and accolades is never ending. Aretha Franklin has cleared the way for other female and black artists to succeed; it was not an easy feat for her to achieve so many firsts and Aretha Franklin did so in a different time when the world was much more close-minded than it is today.

Aretha Franklin has been on other peoples labels for the majority of her career. Finally in 2004, after forty-four years in the business, she launched her own record label, Aretha Records. Since launching and working under her own label, her career has expanded to further heights; more recently of which when she was the only featured singer at the 2009 Presidential Inauguration ceremony. She is a trailblazer even today, leading other artists such as Pearl Jam and MMJ at the upcoming 2010 New Orleans Jazz Fest. She is one of the most respected and revered artists in music today, and Aretha Franklin tickets are in increasingly high-demand. She has received some of the highest honors in music to be achieved.

How do I Break into Show Business?

Tips and ToolsPosted by carina 09 Nov, 2008 05:54AM

Is Show Business for Everyone?

Many people have the dream of breaking into Show Business one day in their life. While many have the inborn talent to make it big some may have to work hard to polish it. But irrespective of whatever everybody has to plan and take a right approach to get a break in Showbiz.

But remember success doesn't come overnight; you have to work hard and even harder to make it big in Show business. So the first lesson to learn is stay away from agents who promise you to make a big star overnight.

Analyze Yourself...

The first and foremost thing to know before entering the Show Business is that you should analyze yourself whether you have it in you to break into Show Business. Somebody can teach you to sing and act but cannot make you an actor or singer unless you have it in you called the desire.

Question yourself whether you will be able to face the challenges like different work environment, different style of living, new people, new places and many more that might come in your way and the tough competition ahead. A lot depends on how flexible and adaptable you are. If you have a rigid personality then forget about getting a break as this industry demands you to work with people having different kinds of personalities and the possibility of differences creeping in cannot be ruled out.

Get a Job!

Once you analyze yourself and you are confident you must be willing to pack your bags and get started. But a piece of advise here, do not quit your job or even if you quit your job to move to a different place keep working part time to keep yourself financially supported.

Do not wait until the time you are broke. Many big actors and musicians kept working until they made it big.Find a job which is flexible and doesn't come in the way of your auditions or plan things in such a way that you get to attend at least one audition a day.

Auditions and Marketing - Be Prepared!

Talking about auditions, do not ever go to the auditions unprepared. Best thing to do is join some classes which offer training in whatever area of Showbiz you want to get into. One of the benefits of joining the classes is that they will help you polish your skills according to the needs of the market you are intending to work in. Further they will help you market yourself better by making your resume work to the modern day requirements.

The marketing part is important because you cannot do anything with all the talent you have unless you know how to market your talent and skills. You should be prepared for the interviews and also to give confident answers to the questions. Attend workshops organized by many artists. Be prepared to meet new people and socialize with the people who are in this business. Social networking is very important in this industry for the people to take note of your talents. Make it a point to attend events related to what you are pursuing.

Find the Right Agent!

The best thing to break into Show Business is to start with local market and then move to the big market. So find a good agent who knows the local market very well. Do not get into the trap of fraudulent agents. Good agents never ask for money upfront instead they work on commission i.e. they get money only when you are hired and start earning. You should research the market well to find a good agent if possible try to audit the agent and call his/her previous customers.

Make a good portfolio and have some good photographs in it. It is important that you style you hair according to the demands of the market you will be going to work, so spend your money on getting a good hair stylist.

A talented person with a strong desire and the right attitude to gets these things right, would have nobody stopping him/her on the way to making it big in Show Business.

All for now... and Break a leg Everyone ;-)

Music Marketing Strategies You've Probably Overlooked...

Tips and ToolsPosted by carina 19 Feb, 2008 01:08AM
Hi everyone,

The music industry has changed so much over the last few years, and clearly, the major label option is becoming less desirable for a lot of people. Instead people are going DYI, or Do-It-Yourself.

One of the most common mistakes I see the DIY crowd make is to think that "marketing" simply means putting up a website and a MySpace page. Online marketing is much, much more than that, and the people who realize that and learn more about doing it right will ultimately sell more of their music.

Did you know there are over three million bands and artists on MySpace? How will you stand out? How will you drive traffic to your site or your MySpace page? How will you get people to listen and BUY your music if you can GET them to your site?

Mitch Meyerson is a world-class expert on this subject. He's a certified Guerilla Marketing Coach, and has written one of my all-time favorite online marketing books, 'Success Secrets of the Online Marketing Superstars,' and he just released his new book, 'Mastering Online Marketing.'

I featured Mitch on the Marketing panel at the Road Rally, and he was SWAMPED with eager TAXI members who bought every book he had. But what REALLY makes Mitch somebody you can relate to is that he's ALSO a musician.

I highly recommend his books, and as always, I don't make a penny from this recommendation.

Mastering Online Marketing

But there's something that baffles me. Why don't more DIY artists create another income stream for themselves while they're working at selling their music? Why do they think that doing just ONE thing is enough?

Film and TV Music has become a huge buzz-phrase, yet so many musicians I meet know very little about it. They're missing TONS of great opportunities to make more money with their music because they haven't taken the time to REALLY understand the market and how they might profit from it.

Getting your music picked up for TV shows and movies is a gazillion times easier than landing a record deal and you won't have to sleep on a tour bus smelling your bandmates' sweaty socks from Peoria to Petaluma.

Keep your day job until you don't need it!

Most of the music you hear in TV shows, movies and TV commercials has been done by people very much like you. They're not rock stars, they're not John Williams, and they're doing it from home studios all over the world!

Turn up the sound on your TV and listen carefully.

Could you do that Jazz piano in the restaurant scene, the Country song on the honky-tonk jukebox, or the finger-picked acoustic guitar track in the Home Depot commercial?

If you think that TV and film music means lush orchestral pieces that are complicated to produce, then you've already missed tens of thousands of golden opportunities to license your music.

Got accordion music? Somebody needs it. Got solo piano or guitar Instrumentals, Electronic, Hip-Hop, Rock, Pop, Jazz and every other genre of music imaginable? They need those too -- with and without vocals!

There are millions of tracks used on hundreds of TV networks, 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, all over the world. How many of them are yours?

If your music makes the grade, TAXI will get it directly to the publishers, production music libraries and music supervisors who choose that music.

Songwriting stucture...

SongwritingPosted by carina 09 Nov, 2007 09:45AM

Songwriting!

The structure of a song is the framework the song is built on, the bones, the skeleton. I normally look at two basic forms with students, the classic American Pop or Country form of verse / chorus / bridge, and what I unscientifically refer to as the classic "early Beatle British Pop" form of a/a/b/a — both of which can incorporate infinite variations within the basic forms.

This article breaks down the elements of the classic American Pop / Country form in a very basic way. I will deal with the other in another foundational article.
The following is a very basic overview of the most vital points you'll need to know in order to structure your song in a more or less classic American Pop song form.

Length

These days, Pop songs are generally around three and half to four minutes in length. With the consolidation of radio stations and centralized programming, airtime is more valuable that ever. So the compact Pop song form is alive and well as a standard in the radio and record industry.

The chorus is your focus!

Intro

The intro is where your song is set up; it tells the story of your song before the first lyric starts. There is a feel to a good intro.
The elements of a song, the groove, the feel, the musical texture, and the atmosphere are all introduced in the intro. There is an attention-grabbing confidence to a good intro that makes you want to hear what is coming next.
However, one way to lose listeners' attention is to bore them with an overly long intro. Set your song up and get to it.

Verse

The verse is the body of your song. The purpose of the verse is to tell the story. Even if the actual language is impressionistic, the main point is the communication. A contemporary song might be loaded with imagery, or it can be conversational. But the story line—what you are trying to say—should be communicated in a clear way.
Ideally, the story line and structure should also build so there is some kind of dramatic arc that keeps listeners engaged. Mere observation can be interesting, but if it doesn't tell a story that develops it will get boring. Boring is a big mistake to make in a three-and-a-half-minute song.
The verse generally goes about 45 seconds when there is no pre-chorus. In songs with a pre-chorus, the verse is generally closer to 30 seconds long.

Pre-Chorus

A pre-chorus is a building section that comes after the verse and before a chorus. It usually has a dynamic ramping-up quality that leads into the chorus and provides a transition.
If a pre-chorus is used in a song, the song's structure will usually not need a bridge to provide another section of contrast and relief.
Lyrically and musically, the bridge can come from a different point of view and tell another aspect of the story in a way the verse and chorus maybe can't without losing continuity and focus.

Chorus

The chorus is your focus; it's the part of the song the listener should remember. The chorus is the point of the song, the emotional and musical climax, and it is where the whole song is delivered.
I have found the one-minute mark of the song to be about ideal for getting to the chorus. In a three-minute song that gives you three choruses.
The chorus ideally should have the hook/title prominently showcased. It may repeat the hook/title as a first and last line, or repeat it throughout the chorus (but that's a less contemporary device).
Dynamically the chorus should have a lift effect; a melodic, sonic, and emotional feel that brings the section to another level and separates it, gives it contrast in comparison to the verse, pre-chorus or bridge.

Bridge

The bridge is a change up section, usually following after the second chorus. It's designed to provide some contrast and an opportunity to try something different within the context of the songs vibe.
Lyrically and musically, the bridge can come from a different point of view and tell another aspect of the story in a way the verse and chorus maybe can't without losing continuity and focus.

Instrumental Break (or Solo)

Most contemporary song forms will include an instrumental break or instrumental solo of some kind. This usually comes after the second chorus or bridge.
The instrumental break can use the basic form of the verse, which then leads nicely into a chorus. Alternately, the break could be over the chorus structure, which I have found solo instrumentalists seem to prefer because it gives them a chance to vamp on the emotional high point of the song. It can also be very effective for the instrumental break structure be a slight variation of a verse or chorus, or combination of the two.

Outro

The outro of a song, the section after the last chorus, or the repeat of the last chorus, is a let it rip section that can take a song to its conclusion with a flourish. Usually the outro is a chorus or a variation of it that keeps repeating and fading to the end, or more popular in a contemporary sense, the outro can be a slight variation or new section with a cold ending.
